MIT scientists have been experimenting with hot solar cells and working on a new solar device that could revolutionize solar power as we see it today. Solar panels have been slowly gaining traction as we see more and more households upgrading their roofs to solar panels. The problem is, these panels are not cheap and they are also pretty inefficient as fundamental limitations only allow these to absorb a fraction of the energy in sun light.

The MIT scientists are about to change this as they have built a different kind of solar device that uses inventive engineering and advances in materials science to get a lot more of the sun’s energy. They use a trick which involves turning sunlight into heat and then converting it back into light. Compared to traditional cells the MIT device, which is still a prototype, is twice as efficient. At their pace of experiments, you can expect this new device to be available to the market within the next few years.
